TThe
first day of fall brought a beautiful day to the small
town of Donald, Oregon population 750. Along with the
Indian summer day came a group of the Northwest's most
hardcore pool skaters to compete in a contest the likes
of which we had never seen. |

of the best things about being a skater in the Northwest
is the sense of community there is here and this was
the spirit that permeated the afternoon of Donald's
first contest. Props, tailslaps, YEAHS, and other assorted
yells of encouragement filled the air. The backyard
style kidney pool was the showcase for the day. There
is also a concrete mini-ramp adjacent to the bowl. There
were no divisions and the contest was a full on jam
with the winners to be called by audience and skater
approval. There was a conspicuous lack of banners, and
other industry hoopla-it was all about Skateboarding
and fun. |

Man Ray and Old Man Keith picked me up at 8am. We took
the proper safety precautions and headed to Newberg
for a quick session before the contest. After the session
we headed out to Donald. When we arrived there was already
about 25 people there. Our friends from various parts
of the Northwest welcomed us and the session ensued.

lot of the old dogs came out of the woodwork for the
festivities. Notable ripper Matt French from Salem flowed
around the pool, pulling rock and roll sliders over
the stairs to fakie, Indy nose picks in the deep, frontside
airs, and an assortment of other tricks. Red was in
fine form-he was having a blast smiling away going mach
10. He pulled smooth backside ollies into the shallow,
handplants, layback airs and grinds, and boneless ones.
Sam Hitz was flowing long, very long frontside grinds,
and lipslides. Chris Adams was going off-he pulled a
transfer from the mini into the deep end of the bowl-the
trick of the day! He also pulled huge frontside airs,
frontside rock and rolls, 50 50's, and boardslides.

Dyke was speeding through with frontside grinds over
the stairs, and everywhere else. Bubba from Newberg
was rolling in frontside and backside. Donald local,
Ian Merrick was tearing with rock and roll slides
over the stairs, frontside airs in the deep, frontside
grinds, rock and rolls, and he even pulled a frontside
360 air, but bailed after landing-he is 14 years old!
A highlight was a frontside air while taking his helmet
off and tipping it to the crowd. Another local, Donovan
was carve grinding so fast at times it seemed like
he was just holding on. This kid's flow is impressive
as well-he's another member of the Young Bowlrider's
association
